MOHOST FAQ’s

How much should I charge for my parking space?

The minimum charge to the guest per night, including electric hook-up is £30, but this could be much more.

For example, during peak times, if you are close to a famous sporting event, or concert venue. You may live in the heart of Edinburgh during the Fringe Comedy festival. You might live in a tourist hotspot such as York, Cornwall, London or Skye.

You will soon know how popular your space is and if the demand is high and you are taking bookings well in advance, it might be time to increase your prices slightly to reflect market demand and local events.

How does the payment and cancellation process work?

Payment Process

When a Guest makes an overnight booking for your parking space on our website, they have a choice of a standard booking or they can add ‘Cancellation Cover’. If your guest chooses a standard booking, any cancellation or no-show is non-refundable (for the guest), regardless of the circumstances.

You will be paid directly into your Bank Account or Paypal Account, depending on how you have set up your payment options. Your payment should be in your account up to 10 days after the completion of the overnight stay.

Cancellation Process

If your guest chooses the ‘Cancellation Cover’ they have up until 1.00 p.m 48 hrs before the arrival time to cancel their booking. In this case, you will receive no fee, but you might have time to take another booking. Obviously, in the vast majority of cases, your Guest will arrive and you will receive payment upto 10 days after the completion of the overnight stay.

If your guest cancels and does not have cancellation cover you will receive your fee.

As soon as the booking is made, you will receive an order confirmation and your calendar will automatically show that you are booked up.

How much does mohost charge?

mohost.co.uk receives 24% of the cost charged to the Guest for the overnight stay.

This enables us to manage and maintain the administration side of the business, covering the cost of continuous development of our website, pay fees on every booking to Stripe, our ultra-secure payment platform provider and also for the continuous, ongoing marketing costs, which in turn allows us to expand our offering to guests and future mohosts alike.

What do I need to provide an electric hook-up for my Guest?

As a minimum, you will need to have a switched 13 amp socket near your parking space. This could be in your garage or it could be mounted on a wall outside your house. Your guest will arrive with a hook-up cable which will be at least 10 metres long. It plugs into the guest’s vehicle and then needs to plug into your socket/power supply, however your 13 amp socket is not suitable for the guest’s hook-up plug. If your socket/power supply is inside your garage or property you will need to buy an adapter such as this from Halfords at around £7.50.

If your power supply is wall mounted outside your property you will need to fit an IP67 rated (waterproof) 16 amp socket such as this from Electrical Counter which costs just over £13.04 + delivery.

The above socket should be fitted under or beside an external RCD enclosure such as this from Screwfix which costs £11.01.

You will also need a 16 amp MCB module such as this from Screwfix which costs £4.39 for your RCD enclosure.

The main benefit of having your power supply with an MCB for your Guests, wall mounted outside your house or garage is that you don’t even have to be home when your Guest arrives or leaves. Obviously, you will need to make sure that the external power supply is switched on. Another benefit is, if your Guest overloads the circuit, they will be able to re-set the power supply themselves by flicking the switch, without having to involve you. As opposed to you having to change a fuse if you are using a 13 amp socket inside your house or garage. (please ensure you have spare 13 amp fuses to hand).

A simpler, but more expensive solution is to install an all-in-one unit such as this  which costs £53.94 with a single outlet or this which costs £71.40 with 2 outlets, if you have 2 available parking spaces.

In all instances, your power supply should be RCD protected. If in doubt, please consult an approved electrician. The above information is for guidance only.

What happens if my Guest is anti-social or they or their vehicle cause damage to my property?

It is a legal requirement for all vehicle drivers to have 3rd party insurance which should cover accidental damage to you or your property.

In the extremely rare case that something like this might happen, we recommend that you try and resolve it and come to an agreement with your Guest. If that fails, you may need to contact the Guest’s motor insurance company or as a last resort the police.

If you have problems of this type and are not happy with the outcome, please let us know by email, and we may take action against the Guest by removing them from our website.

My Guests can rate me, but can I rate my Guests?

At the moment, the answer is no, but it is something that we are looking to introduce as we develop the site further.

Is the income I receive taxable?

Our understanding is that you can earn a total of £1000 per year from renting out part of your property without declaring it but we advise, if you are unsure, that you take independent financial advice to clarify the position.

Do you sell my personal details or share them with any third parties for marketing purposes?

No we do not and never will.
